Practice on the Water, Fall & Spring
The team practices on the Cuyahoga River, launching from the Cleveland Rowing Foundation Boathouse in the Flats. Practices are held Monday through Friday. The Shaker Heights school district provides a bus and driver to take the girls to the boathouse during the week. The bus leaves the high school promptly at 4:00pm from the North side of SHHS and returns at approximately 7:00pm.
2010 Fall practice begins August 23
Winter Land Training
From December through February (or whenever the river is not considered warm enough to row on), the team works out at school. Aerobic exercise, flexibility conditioning, weight training and indoor rowing on ergometers all form part of the winter conditioning season. Practice is usually held in 90 minute shifts, beginning at 3:00pm and ending at 6:00pm. Winter conditioning is mandatory for all girls planning to row in the spring season.
2011 Winter practice schedule: Beginning of January through February
On-water practice begins Beginning of March (weather permitting)
There will be practice during Spring Break (TBA)
Attendance
Regular attendance is expected at practice and regattas. If a rower is unable to attend practice, she should notify the coaches. Participating in a race depends to a great extent on attendance. If a team member misses many practices, she risks the possibility of being in fewer races or not being boated at all.
To limit missed practices, try to schedule appointments between 3:00 and 4:00, during the weeks between the fall season and winter conditioning, or on weekends when possible. An attendance record of 80% is required for rowers to be boated in upcoming regattas.
